During the 2008 Olympics, the Beijing Water Cube became a recognized international icon as the home for swimming and diving events, but in 2010 it was transformed a wondrous new water park. Happy Magic Water Cube was designed by Forrec, a design firm based in Toronto, Canada with the goal of retaining key features of the buildings original design while creating an atmosphere that is “playful enough to create excitement, but still sophisticated enough to complement the geometry of the architecture.”
Forrec describes their project:
The 11,000 m2 Water Park was conceived as having 2 separate personalities. During the day, sunlight shining through the building’s skin and illuminating the thematic elements creates the sensation of a sunlit tropical lagoon. At night, theatrical lighting is used to create a luminous underwater fantasy realm that many visitors have compared to being inside a 3D movie or a computer game.
I’ve posted about the water cube before. But it really is an amazing building!! I was lucky enough to be able to visit/see it DURING the Bejing Olympics. AMAZING!!
